In this step-by-step tutorial I will show you how to crochet these wonderful and quite realistic trees. At first sight, it may seem that it is hard to crochet them, but you should not be an advanced crocheter to do such work, all you need is patience and a couple of hours of free time. Still I hope that even experienced crocheters will find this tutorial interesting.
Besides, by changing the color of the yarn, you can create various trees, according to each season. Or, if you do not attach leaves at all, you will get a winter tree.
Here are the examples of the finished trees:
In the tutorial, I will take a weeping willow as an example, which makes me think of summer.
Materials and instruments:
- Yarn: green for the base and brown for the tree;
- Also green fur yarn;
- Crochet hook 2 mm (B-1);
- Felt fabric sheets of several colour shades to add more texture. You may use felt of any thickness.
- Polyfill stuffing;
- A piece of cardboard;
- Sweing thread of the same colour as leaves;
- Sewing needle;
- MR - Magic Ring
- st - stitch
- sc - single crochet
- inc - increase
- dec - decrease
- slst- slip stitch
Let us start with crocheting the tree. We should use the brown yarn.
R1: start with 70 st, join together in a circle (70)
R2-7 (6 rows): 70 sc
R8: 12 dec, 26 sc, 5 dec, 10 sc (53)
R9-18 (10 rows): 53 sc
R19: *6 sc, dec* x 6 times, 5 sc (47)
R20-29: (10 rows): 47 sc
R30: *5 sc, dec* x 6 times, 5 sc (41)
R31-35 (5 rows): 41 sc
R36: *4 sc, dec* x 6 times, 5 sc (35)
R37-39 (3 rows): 35 sc
The first branch:
R40: 20 sc, count 20 stitches back, go to the beginning of the row, slst. Now you have a circle, the beginning of a big branch. Continue crocheting around this circle.
R41-47 (7 rows): 20 sc
R48-50 (3 rows): 2 dec, 6 sc, 2 inc, 8 sc (20)
R51-54 (4 rows): 20 sc
R55: 16 sc, 2 dec (18)
R56: *1 sc, dec* (12)
R57: 12 dec, tie off.
The second branch: Continue crocheting at the beginning of the 40th row of the trunk.
R1: 15 sc
R2-6 (5 rows): 2 dec, 4 sc, 2 inc, 5 sc (15)
R7: 15 sc
R8-10 (3 rows): 2 dec, 4 sc , 2inc, 5 sc (15)
R11-12 : 15 sc
R13: 14 dec, tie off.
4 smaller branches:
R1: 6 sc in MR
R2-9 (8 rows): 6 sc (6)
R10: 2 inc, 4 sc (8), sl.
Cut a tail of about 8-10 cm (3-4 inches) that you will use when sewing on the branches.
Stuff all the parts with polyfill. Put a wire inside the main branches, but before bend the end as it is shown in the picture:
Twist the two wires together and cut off the excess. Sew on smaller branches(4 pieces) to the tree.
I have used thicker yarn for better steadiness. In this case, the size of the handiwork will be bigger compared to the handiwork made with yarn of average thickness, so you will have to crochet by feel. If you do not have thicker yarn, use average. Besides, you can crochet the base of any size or shape you like.
R1 : 6 sc in MR
R2: inc in each stitch (12)
R3: *1 sc , 1 inc* (18)
R4: *2sc, 1 inc (24)
R5: *3 sc, 1 inc* (30)
R6: *4 sc, 1 inc* (36)
R7: *5 sc, 1 inc *(42)
R8: *6 sc, 1 inc* (48)
R9: *7 sc, 1 inc* (54)
R10: *8 sc, 1 inc* (60)
R11: *9 sc, 1 inc* (66)
R12: *10 sc, 1 inc* (72)
R13: *11 sc, 1 inc* (80)
R14: 80 sc in the back loop (80)
R15-17: 80 sc (80), slst. , tie off.
Cut out round cardboard plate, about 6 cm in diameter (2,3 inches). Put into the crocheted base:
Now you should attach the tree to the base. You will need greed fur yarn.
R1: in the yarned tree, insert the crochet hook into the bottom row and crochet the whole row round. (70)
R2: *10 sc, inc * x 6 times, 4 sc (76)
R3: 2inc, 76 sc (80).
Now sew the two parts together:
Finally, you should have a tree like this:
The last step is creating leaves. Cut out many leaves from felt fabric, you can choose any form you like. Sew the leaves together in a row, interchanging the colors.
Sew the leaves on. Keep on sewing the leaves until all branches are decorated.
R1: 20 st, join into a circle (20)
R2: 20 sc (20).
You can decorate a tree with artificial moss, if you wish. Glue it to the tree with instant glue.
Done! Good luck!
